Well it's been a long time.
Hi Everybody. I didn't post anything for a long time, because
I had no news.
Oh, I should re-introduce myself.
My name is Martin, and I'm from Ireland-county Carlow to be exact. My mother has a tumour and according to her doctor
the only way to get rid of it is to remove the eye.
Last thursday, I travelled up to the waterford, with my mother
and we spoke with the doctor. He explained that at the moment
the tumour had only grown very slightly, but you can't really predict at what rate these things will develop.
So my mother agreed that it would be the best thing for her.
So until tonight, I was resigned to my mother losing an eye.
But tonight I was talking on the net to a guy from the states.
I'd be interested in your opinions.

[2007-10-22 22:55] <irish> my mother has to get an eye removed
[2007-10-22 22:56] <purk> oh boy, sorry to0 hear that,. how does she feel about that? Is she blind?
[2007-10-22 22:56] <irish> No, tumour, too far in
[2007-10-22 22:56] <purk> ahhh,
[2007-10-22 22:56] <irish> not blind
[2007-10-22 22:56] <purk> sorry
[2007-10-22 22:56] <purk> is she OK othrwise?
[2007-10-22 22:56] <irish> Well she's not happy about it
[2007-10-22 22:56] <purk> gonna spend some time in hospital for sure
[2007-10-22 22:56] <purk> ya, right. How old?
[2007-10-22 22:56] <irish> But she recognises it's the best option
[2007-10-22 22:57] <purk> you bet
[2007-10-22 22:57] <irish> around 84
[2007-10-22 22:57] <purk> got second opinions and all that???
[2007-10-22 22:57] <purk> If it is an agreed upon action by several docs she shopuld go ahead
[2007-10-22 22:57] <irish> waiting for word to have the op in two two three weeks
[2007-10-22 22:57] <purk> not just one doc tho
[2007-10-22 22:57] <irish> no just one doc
[2007-10-22 22:57] <purk> GET A SECOND OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[2007-10-22 22:58] <purk> Must ALWAYS do that
[2007-10-22 22:58] <purk> Docs are not offended. Frack 'em if they are. There are several approaches to all medical proscedures but ones that are serious will have only one option
[2007-10-22 22:58] <irish> Oh, Well, I'll tell ya, someone else did that and wrong decision made by person
[2007-10-22 22:58] <purk> only way to find that out is several opinions
[2007-10-22 22:59] <irish> Well I don't know if she can get other opinions
[2007-10-22 22:59] <purk> ???????
[2007-10-22 22:59] <purk> sure she can
[2007-10-22 22:59] <purk> where are you
[2007-10-22 22:59] <irish> this is her doctor
[2007-10-22 22:59] <irish> ireland
[2007-10-22 22:59] <irish> she is on a medical card
[2007-10-22 22:59] <purk> bullshit. there are onl;y doctors not just YOUR doctor
[2007-10-22 23:00] <irish> But I'll make inquiries
[2007-10-22 23:00] <purk> that\s crazy in my opinion
[2007-10-22 23:00] <purk> please do/ No one doctro has the answeer to such a seerious question
[2007-10-22 23:00] <irish> ok, thanks for advice, purk
[2007-10-22 23:00] <purk> as the loss of an eye. There may be new procedures...new doctors
[2007-10-22 23:00] <purk> you bet and tell her to buck up cuz even it it comes back to that operation
[2007-10-22 23:01] <irish> ok, I'll ring the hospital tomorrow
[2007-10-22 23:01] <purk> there are plenty of people running around with one eye
[2007-10-22 23:01] <purk> well, they won't be too helpful I imagine
[2007-10-22 23:01] <irish> Well she's not showing any outward signs of being worried
[2007-10-22 23:01] <purk> you wanna actually go to another doctor
[2007-10-22 23:01] <purk> well, she's b3eing a stoic right now
[2007-10-22 23:02] <purk> but the tumor is serious and she shopul;d ask for another opinion, several perhaps
[2007-10-22 23:02] <irish> Oh, don't know how. she is on a medical card
[2007-10-22 23:02] <irish> ie being done for free
[2007-10-22 23:02] <purk> not just allow those bastids to do what they wanna do to get some money from the gov
[2007-10-22 23:02] <purk> free is not any goddam good if it cost ya an eye for crissake
[2007-10-22 23:02] <irish> But I'll see
[2007-10-22 23:02] <purk> ask them to explain the procedure for this opperation
[2007-10-22 23:02] <purk> and ask if other docs have been consulted
[2007-10-22 23:03] <irish> Look obviously i would love for my mother to keep her eye
[2007-10-22 23:03] <purk> otherwise they just put her on a conveyor belt operation
[2007-10-22 23:03] <purk> yes, so would we all
[2007-10-22 23:03] <purk> and if it's possible you will only find out if you persist in asking for clarity
[2007-10-22 23:03] <irish> pity i didn't contact you before last thursday
[2007-10-22 23:03] <purk> why?
[2007-10-22 23:04] <irish> that's when I travelled with my mother to see the doctor
[2007-10-22 23:04] <purk> never too late to interject before they topss ya on the table
I mean shit, just because it's free does that m,ean y9ou have no say ihj the matter
[2007-10-22 23:04] <purk> ahhh
[2007-10-22 23:04] <purk> I see,
[2007-10-22 23:04] <irish> He explained that it's not very dangerous at the moment
[2007-10-22 23:04] <purk> well call 'em back and find out if other docs were consulted and how to get a second opinion about this procedure
[2007-10-22 23:04] <purk> the tumor???
[2007-10-22 23:04] <irish> but this things can get worse slowly or rapidly
[2007-10-22 23:04] <irish> yes

Hi Martin; good to see u back on!!your mum is real trooper;
I had choilodal melanoma (tumour) in my left eye; it was discovered on a Thursday and I was in hospital on Monday; it was the biggest my specialist had seen; it had already detached my retina; and my eye was also heamoraging; I had no time for 2nd opinion but I trusted him instinctively 100%; I still see him 15 years later; if you do have more time ask for a 2nd opinion; has she had an ultrasound on her eye; this can measure the growth rate; if she hasnt had one before; ask for it now and then ask for another in 2-3 weeks so any growth between the two ultrasounds can be calculated; has your mum any pain? I wish you both well; quite a few of us on here has had tumour so I'm sure you will get a lot of advice; Jay also lost his eye to choilodal melanoma; best wishes; Vera

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome. :)
No, my mother has no pain. But she told the doctor that the vision
seemed slightly worse. The doctor said that the tumour had gotten slightly bigger, but not to a significant degree.
I think she did have an ultrasound, but no harm in getting it confirmed.
Thanks for advice.
M

Hi Martin; any chance of taking your Mum to Royal Vic in Belfast! I know it's a fair way; and maybe her card not valid there but Tina seems to have had very good attention there for a number of years; best wishes; Vera

Hi Vera.
Thanks for replying. Thanks for suggestion. I feel though
that she is been given very good care in waterford.
The Doctor we spoke to was very patient.
Just some things concern me from my conversation with guy from America.
(1) were other doctors asked their opinion
(2) did she have ultrasound
(3) let's say my mother gets another opinion, and this guy says "wait, and see how things develop" Then she decides to wait.
Let's take it as a given that the cancer grows. How would it affect my mother ie her heath, would she be in pain?
How long would it take to develop in an elderly lady.

In my opinion I wouldn't waste too much time seeking second opinions. I think if you and your mum are happy with the doc and hospital then stay there. The other doctors may say that eye removal is the best option for your mum. I know your probably worried sick for your mum, but she will be in the best possible hands. Feel free to get a second opinion if you want, but just bare in mind the outcome may be the same. Vera is right, I've had great treatment at the RVH and would recommend it to anyone in N.I, but it is quite a distance to travel.

Best wishes Petal.
Good luck to your mother.
