It is interesting how different individuals cope with eye loss and disfigurement. Facial differences can be especially difficult since they cannot be hidden from view.
The eyes communicate with others. Through the eyes trust is established. When those we meet uncomfortably avert eye contact or look past us, it is painful. Not everyone with eye loss has prosthetic movement or dark colored eyes to hide the pupil response to light.
There are the initial assumptions made by others, based on superficial appearance, that someone with "odd" eyes is intellectually deficient or psychologically flawed. No doubt many of us worked extra hard to be high achievers as a result of our loss. Eye loss can difficult for anyone, but for those with the inborn traits of high sensitivity, it can be absolutely devastating, since emotions are felt on a deeper level.
On this site there is an online sensitivity test by psychologist Elaine Aron who wrote the books, "The Highly Sensitive Person" and "The Highly Sensitive Child."
