Holy guacamole Meaks! What a story!!!

It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Ya'ara, 36, U.S. citizen working in Romania. I lost the use of my left eye due to complications following LASIK in 2002. The eye's still there but it's mostly freeloading.

I absolutely love your attitude -- and who says you can't be a model or an actress, eh??? And I'm with you on the age thing. I hated being 17! Each decade is better than the one before -- just wait till your thirties!!!

Anyway, welcome! It's good to have you here.

Ya'ara

Hi Meaks!

Firstly, thanks for the encouragement and insight on the string about my wife. There certainly is no end to the different and strange ways people end up with one eye. My wife actually got a rare parasite called Acanthameoba that infested her cornea and destroyed it. They tried to kill it with toxins and also froze her entire cornea and much of her sclera to wipe it out - but to no avail. They thought they had killed it and gave her a cornea transplant - only to find the bugs were still alive and her only option was removing the eye. She is just past a week of her surgery and doing fantastic in my opinion. There are up and down days, but she is pushing forward with faith in God and conviction in her heart to keep living - I am VERY proud of her.

Your story is so inspiring. I appriciate your spirit and look forward to getting to know you through the posts on this board. I must be the most committed 2 eyed reader and poster we have here! But I can't stop because everyone here is so honest and helpful that I keep learning by reading the stories and advice.

Welcome aboard!

Bob

Hi There,

My brother injured in road accident, and has been treated at Aravind Eye Care System.
I am here reproducing text of discharge report given to us. Please advice me if there is any better treatment available for this case.

Thank you and regards
Ramesh

The report says the following:
On Examination his left eye showed lid edema with multiple sutured lacerations both over the upper and lower lids. Corneal edema was present with total hyphema. The right eye was normal. The visual acuity in right eye was 6/6 and left eye was perception of light only with faulty projection. X-ray orbit was taken which ruled out any intra ocular foreign body. B-scan Ultrasonography of the left eye showed evidence of scleral tear temporally with vitreous hemorrhage and the status of retina could not be as assessed.

On 17-06-2006, he underwent re-suturing of the lid laceration as they were irregular. On 19-06-2006, he was taken for globe repair and possible vitrecotmy. On exploration a large irregular sclearal tear extending from 10’ O’Clock onwards extending inferiorly and posteriorly towards the posterior pole with uveal tissue and vitreous prolapse. The wound was reparired and globe was formed. Due to the poor visual prognosis for any further surgical intervention, further vitrectomy was not done. The same was explained to the patient and his attenders. Post operative period was uneventful. He has discharged on 22-06-2006 and advised to review with us after 1 month. The report is given on patient’s request.

Ramesh,
I'm not a doctor, (nor do I play one on TV :) so I can't comment on the discharge reports, but I'd suggest you do some research and find the best eye care professional in your area and take your brother to see him/her

Hi Ramesh -

http://www.aaeeh.org/locations.html

This is a link to the American Association of Eye and Ear Hospitals. It lists US specialty hospitals and as well as some facilities in Europe.

I was hoping there would be a listing near you but I didn't see one.

You might give one of them a call anyway, however. They may be able to help you find a specialist near you or help with your questions. For instance, I just called Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia to see how far ahead I need to make an appointment, and they told me they can give referral information to Wills Eye-trained doctors who have left the Philadelhpia area.

Your brother is so fortunate to have you.

Hi,
I was watching the show Dr. 90210 on E! tonight because I just think that plastic surgery is so interesting and amazing. Anyway, tonight's episode had a man who was in an awful car accident. A bunch of doctors have taken him on as a pro bono case. Basically his whole face was shattered in this accident. He had to have his right eye removed. He wears a clear shell in the socket. The doctor was shown examining the socket and explaining to him that he wants to put a large implant in and then make a painted prosthesis that would be worn over it. I just sat there watching and nodding my head because I've been there! It is so interesting. I often wonder what someone who is not knowledgable about this area feels when they hear or see this kind of stuff. I think its great that this was shown tonight though.

Just wanted to share with my Losteye buddies:)
Have a good night,
Jodi

so i understand what the guy on the show went through only i didnt lose my eye, just the sight in it/

a lot of people only know (myself included formerly) of the plastic surgeons who do nose/boob/facelift jobs. nut there is actually a large mnumber of artists. who rebuild what was destroyed.

Yeah, not all plastic surgeons are the cosmetic kinds, many are actually in it to help people....

Still, I gotta give you both credit,,,Rukus for suriving that ordeal and still having a good outlook on life, and Star for actually being able to watch that LOL :)

Oh, I love watching it. But, they didnt do the procedure on the man yet....it is in next week's episode. I do NOT think that i will be able to watch it. Sometimes, its better to not see what they have to do. Its like, im grateful to my doctor for performing the surgery on me, but i am so glad that i was under general and unaware of what went into it. I think it might freak me out to see it on screen what they actually did to me..you know?

I am an advocate for plastic surgery and I have met a few surgeons that are all in it for the money, but then i have also met a few surgeons with a heart of gold who do cosmetic work.

The accident was simply a child’s game gone awry.
Mike Clouse was 81⁄2 years old when he, his brother and his cousin were playing tag in the woods near Leesville, using BB guns to shoot above their heads to indicate one of them was tagged.
In a life-changing instant, one of the BBs bounced off a tree, hitting Clouse in the eye and blinding him.

I probably might of sent a message before, but I don't remember.
Just wondering about anyone who got their one eye problem by a major accident. And my eye was 2 at the time after but in a different looking because of that part of my scull was broken and moofen. It was only less than 1/4 open. So I had it closed completed. Now things are much better for sight.

My major accident was motorcycle. I had m/c for over 28 years at the time. The man who hit my with another motorcycle had been driving his for 2 days, with no license. This goes on and on for me with lots of problems. Oh well, not much I can do.

Please let me know if you have any problems that are closely the same as mine, and what your doing these days.

Thanks,
Jim
