Hi!

My name is Rebecca. I am 39 years old and was born with an incompletely-formed blind left eye with a cataract. I had a few surgeries as a child and my eye grew increasingly painful and unsightly over the past several years. I believe the final surgery childhood surgery was botched.

I had not not seen an eye doctor in may years. Things got pretty bad last spring (red, painful, swollen) and I finally got the courage to make an appointment with a an opthalmologist. Because the eye was so bad, I knew deep down that it would probably have to be removed. Finding the courage to proceed with the surgery was the most frightening experience of my life!

I live in Atlanta and had the enucleation surgery performed last October, by a fabulous Oculoplastic Surgeon at Emory University in Atlanta. The socket and porous implant healed for a couple of months and I had my new eye made last December by a gifted and wonderful ocularist.

The new eye is nothing short of miraculous! It is really beautiful and moves well. I honestly don't think anyone who did not know me before would have any idea that I have an artificial eye.

Though this is my first post, I visit this site often. All of you (of course, Jay especially) have been very helpful and inspirational to me. Thanks for all of your insight and support.

Rebecca

Dear Riverdog:

My ocularist is Angela Cotton in Decatur (Atlanta), GA and I adore her. She is a true artist and has been doing this for 30 years. She spent so much time with me and made me feel so comfortable. She treated my spirit as well as my body.
