Hi,

I've been monocular since birth. I had a tough childhood, but I got stronger as I grew up. Now I feel better to have found a forum like this!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

My ocularist said I had something they call 'smalling eye'. I don't clearly remember it, because it was a Latin term. I vaguely remember the Turkish term only, and it's something like smalling eye like I said. Anyone knows the Latin term for it?

When I was like 7 years old, I remember asking my mother what happened to my right eye. She told me that the doctors were not sure, but it might have something to do with the Chernobyl disaster. Since then, I've never asked. I don't really want to bring it up again, yet I'm dying to know the cause behind it. Why? What was wrong? Do I have a disease that I don't know about? Could that be cancer? Do I have a risk of losing my good eye and going totally blind? I don't know... But I'm curious. What should I do? :hilfe:

I really think that you need to speak with your mom about what really happened. Because there are so many possibilities-it's best to know. I know that it will be difficult to talk to her about it-but in the end it may even bring the two of your closer and you'll feel better because you will know exactly what you're dealing with and what some expectations for the future may be.

And welcome.

Now that you are older it might be easier to ask your Mom about what happened to your eye. Another option is to talk with your doctor during your next visit. My parents were very open with me about my eye issues that I had since birth, I plan on doing the same with my son Henry when he is older.

Good luck,

Karen

One-eyed Jacks (and Jills) aren't that different than anyone else.

I think that's what I'm going to do. My next visit will be in this summer.

Please excuse my ignorance, but is monocular vision hereditary?

I do feel asking your doctor at your summer appointment would be a good idea.

Your question is not out of ignorance at all. For some monocular vision is hereditary, but for many it is not. I was born with cataracts, as was my sister, it goes back several generations in my family so we are sure it is hereditary. My son was born with cataracts, my daughter was lucky and did not have them. My son became monocular when he got a horrible infection in his left eye after surgery to remove the cataracts. Thankfully his right eye is in good shape.

Good luck getting answers, you deserve to know as much as is known about what happened so you can know how to take the best care possible of your remaining eye.

Karen
