Hi, my name is Sade. About a month and a half ago I suffered an open globe eye injury. I was immediately rushed to OR to get my eye stitched up. I've gotten used to only having vision in one eye, but at times it's still difficult. I'm an IT in the US Navy, and it doesn't seem like I'll ever have the ship life again. That sucks because I actually like working on the ship. Anyway, I'm so happy I came across this site and that there are people that can relate to my situation.

Welcome, Sade!! I'm new too. Lost all vision in my left eye due to complications from a detached retina about 4 weeks ago. Not sure what the future holds for me.

I read both your intro and the question you posted on the other forum. Although I don't know enough to be helpful, I just wanted to let you know that I empathize with everything you're going through. As my doctor always says to me....be strong. There really seems to be strength in numbers and this site makes one realize, you are not alone!

Hi, Janice. Yes, this site has made me feel so much better. There's a lot of inspiration, and it's helping me cope with all of this.

Hi Janice,
It does take time to get used to the monocular thing. I'm a programmer/analyst and luckily that works well with one eye.
Welcome to our little group,
Janelle

Hi Sade ; again welcome. I don't see why you can't continue in IT. We have monocular pilots here; racecar drivers; and captain on a cruise ship. My hubby a pilot that trains cadets and he's trained a monocular 18yr old. There are few jobs that we can't go for; like active in defence services; police . I worked in IT office admin before and after my eye removed. Don't worry about that now just concentrat on being well informed about the eye. cheers vera

Welcome Sade! Don't worry yet about what you can and can't do. You are only 6 weeks into this and your body and emotions are still going to get the best of you. Even those who don't have a tendency to suffer depression can find it lurking around the edges after an eye injury/vision loss. You may find yourself thinking in worse case scenarios. Until someone tells you that you can't do the job and can't be on the ship (and can site specific regulations as to why you can't), continue pursuing that career path.

Thanks, chemgal. You're absolutely right. They've given me a 6 month period to get better, so I think everything will be fine.
