Hi,

I just had a query to see if someone has had similar problems. I have a coral ball implant, and have been getting pain on an off that is behind the implant. When I wear my eye in, the eye appears swollen. I have taken the eye out and it has relieved some of the pain for a little while. My GP said it didn't appear infected so I'm just taking nurofen for the pain. I've got an appointment with my specialist in two weeks time, but just wondering if people have had any similar experience and if there was anything in the meantime that can help.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi Kev, I've had this for a while, a dull pain in the back of the implant, like a throbbing or an ache, only I had a fair bit of mucus too. I just used to use optrex or like u pain killers, I eventually went to the doctors and was told I did have an infection, I was prescribed chlorophenicol (spelling???) which sorted the mucus and the swelling out a treat, however that dull ache is still there, I'll be interested to read others comments and keep us posted when you see your specialist,

I hope it gets better soon matey

Andy

Hi all,

I have had problems with a deep aching/throbbing pain. I don't have an implant. I had my eye eviscerated, so I still have the muscles and all and a prosthetic (looks like a crecent moon) that lays on top. The pain increase exponentially every time I have an increase in eye discharge. I've gone to the doc to check for infection and they've said I didn't have one; yet, I find it hard to believe increased mucous and pain are coincidental. Unfortunately, the pain is a dull constant everyday that escalates at times. I've had to be treated at a pain clinic for the last year with a pain patch.

I am interested to see how many others have this type of pain in their orbit area and when it started. Does it get worse with reading, computer work, fan? Those seem to trigger an increase in my pain levels....

Well, If Im having pressure problems that exactly the kind of pain I get - but because two of you have an implant, and one has had an evisceration - we cant all be having it from the same source! lol.

I have suffered with both extreemes of high and low IOP, and the pain is essentially the same, around my orbit, and deep in the eye. It feels like someone is standing on my eye.

Uveitis Pain is quite similar, although it feels like it is so deep in my head it is way way way behind my eye.

What do you find relieves it, if anything?

I have heard that both Amitriptyline and Gabapentin are useful in treating eye pain if it is coming from a nerve source.

I misspoke earlier...I do have an implant -- a coral implant. I have tried EVERYTHING OUT THERE...Topomax is the best so far out of the agents for nerve pain (Gabapentin and Lyrica are also in this class). I have a Fentanyl patch and have percocet for breakthrough pain.

As I mentioned before (or in another thread), I will be seeing a NeurOphthalmologist at Johns Hopkins. I had recurrent MRSA eye infections and pain since Feb 06. Hopefully, he will help.

I think this is what i have got it is a aching or throbbing pain deep in the back of my eye or sometimes feels in my head.

My eye is very soft so i think it will be down to that.

Has anyone had it and it has just gone by itself?

irishangel--

you've been around and read thousands of posts -- what have you found to be the cause of this aching/throbbing pain?

My docs at the pain clinic have thus far held on to this "wind-up" theory. Basically, I was pregnant when I got the infection and didn't have good pain control for months. To add insult to injury, I had a couple surgeries and finally when I delivered my baby, the chronic pain was now out of control. There is apparently such thing as "pain memory" where pain signals can continue to be sent back and forth long after the trauma has occured. You can read more about it if you do a google search of wind up pain.

THe Johns Hopkins guys believe there may be scar tissue or even leftover infection -- some physical cause -- still causing this pain.

Anyway, the original opthalmologists I saw still continue to say they never had any patients with this type of orbital pain. So, it is ironic to hear the same from my friends here at losteye. So, please, if anyone else shares this problem, post and let us know your story and how you are dealing with it. My infection also caused my central nervous system to go haywire and eventually, fibromyalgia among other things. This heightens the pain intensity for me.

Enough about me, I'd love to hear how you all deal with this.

More info and an update.

I have a coral ball implant (put in 11 years ago to replace the implant I had for 15 years). I have been getting the pain infrequently for ages, however the pain was really bad about 3 months ago (8 on a scale of 1 to 10). I went to the local hospital's emergency department and they said to take Panadeine Forte or Nurofen and if it got worse to go to the Eye and Ear hospital in Melbourne (2 hr drive). It has been coming and going more frequently since. I made an appointment to see my specialist but it's a four week wait. My local GP said last Friday that it didn't look infected, and wrote me a referral. I also noticed on the weekend that my eye was swollen and bulging. I took out the prosthesis for the weekend, which I thought might eliminate the problem. It helped a little bit, but the pain still came. I find it better having the eye out.

The pain feels like it is at the back of the implant a bit up from the middle, sometimes it's more on top, and other times it's on the side between the implant and my eye. The is minimal discharge.

I had a bad weekend with it and ended up making the journey to Emergency at the Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. (The staff there are great, and also kept me informed on how long the wait was). After 6 hours, the doctor saw me and said it appeared inflammed. I have been prescribed Voltaren Ophtha Eye Drops (an anti inflammatory). They have made me an appointment for a follow up in four weeks time, but I will be going to my normal specialist in two weeks.

I'll keep you updated with how I am going

Kevin

Hi,
Is this sort of pain very normal with implant? I have been adviced for evisceration followed by an coral implant. Right now , I have this kind of pain(deep inide my eye somewhere at nerves) but due to high intraocular pressure(prosthesis not done yet). I am really afraid, if this is the case with implants , should I go for it. Is there any alternative to coral implant ?

Just a beginner of this and want to know its details.

Regards,
Shradha

Hi All, I have an update

Firstly, Shradha, from my experience, I dont think this pain is normal with an implant. I have barely had any problems with implants in 26 years. I had one replaced because it wasn't allowing the prosthesis to sit properly.

With regard my pain, I saw my eye specialist today and he said it was still inflammed. I have been prescribed a different anti-inflammatory eyedrop Prednefrin Forte, which is apparently the strongest anti-inflammatory eyedrop, and also Nurofen (4 times a day for a month). The Nurofen is to assist because the inflammation is so deep in the socket. If i'm not any better in two weeks he said to call him and he will arrange a scan of some description and see what happens from there. Hopefully all goes well.

Regards,
Kevin
